I’m a Celeb 2017: Boris Johnson’s dad Stanley heading to the jungle for ITV show

Stanley Johnson, father of foreign secretary Boris Johnson, has arrived in Australia to take part in the new series of ITV reality show I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out Of Here. He was spotted at Brisbane Airport ahead of the show’s first episode this weekend (19 November).

The show’s producers are hopeful he will stir up some controversy around the campfire. Talking to journalists on his arrival, the former MEP and writer said he was “excited” to be taking part in the hit TV show.

Johnson has six children, including journalist Rachel Johnson and beleaguered Conservative politician Boris Johnson under fire for recent diplomatic gaffes.

His participation in the jungle show could be coming at a particularly bad time for the foreign secretary following a week in which he has faced a torrent of calls to resign for falsely saying a British woman imprisoned in Iran had been visiting the country to “teach people journalism”.

The family of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe insist she was on holiday, and while addressing the issue in parliament last week, Johnson said the government “has no doubt” that was the case prior to her arrest for spying.

Johnson has not apologised for his comment, but did say he “could have been clearer”.

In response Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has called on Prime Minister Theresa May to sack Johnson, calling him “breathtakingly crass” and listing many previous instances in which the bumbling politician has offended important figures and entire nations.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has backed his party leader’s comments. “This is the latest on a long list of gaffes made by our foreign secretary,” Khan told the BBC Andrew Marr show. “I think he’s got to go. If Theresa May was a strong prime minister, she would have sacked him a long time ago.”

Stanley Johnson’s time in the jungle should present plenty of opportunities for conversations about Boris with his fellow campers.

Johnson will be joined in the jungle by boxer Amir Khan, The Saturdays’ singer Vanessa White, actors Jennie McAlpine and Jamie Lomas, retired footballer Dennis Wise, Made in Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo and YouTube star Jack Maynard.
