Pet dogs could live 15 months longer by taking a simple pill which delays the onset of fatal heart disease, a new study suggests.
Around 250,000 dogs suffer from mitral valve disease which can lead to heart failure and eventually early death for around one in 12 dogs in Britain.
Smaller dogs like Kings Charles Spaniels, daschunds, miniature poodles and terriers are most at risk with almost all dying from the condition.
But a trial led by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) has found that the drug pimobendan delays the onset of heart failure for an average of 15 months – the equivalent of eight or nine dog years.

Fierce fighting broke out around the Syrian city of Aleppo Friday as rebels announced a large-scale offensive to break the government’s siege of opposition-held areas.
A reporter inside the city on the pro-government Mayadeen TV channel reported attacks on “all sides” of the city, “from the furthest points north to furthest south.”

A Mexican federal judge who presided over appeals from high-profile drug kingpins in recent years was fatally shot in the head outside his home on Monday, authorities said.
Judge Vicente Bermudez handled several legal challenges lodged by lawyers for Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the jailed leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, as well Miguel Trevino, ex-leader of the Zetas cartel.
