Porn sneaks into iOS 10 GIF search, Apple frantically removes all evidence

Apple is on a moderation spree after users found pornography in iOS 10. The NSFW images were discovered in iMessage’s new GIF search feature, leaving a very red Apple scrabbling to ban search terms.

The X-rated snafu was spotted by website Deadspin, who found that searching certain terms would bring up “very easy-to-find” hardcore pornography. This even happened when searching for fairly innocuous words, like ‘huge’.

Deadspin notes [warning: link contains NSFW content] that the problem appears to be with Apple’s GIF search algorithm, which is powered by Bing and scours the internet for images from a number of sources. But the internet’s seedy side reared itself and scuppered Apple’s good intentions for its new text message feature.

“Its only censorship method thus far seems to be blocking potentially problematic words like ‘boobs’ and ‘penis’ and — as of this morning — ‘butt,'” the publication explained.

“There’s no reason for Apple to think that the word ‘huge’ would bring up anything more than, say, a particularly large pillow or strawberry”.

Since being made away of the issue, Apple has started a heavy-handed clampdown on the terms iOS 10 users can search for in iMessage. And yes, that includes ‘huge’.
