The Swiss Attorney General is looking into embezzlement and money laundering.

Former German goalkeeper Franz Beckenbauer is being investigated by the Swiss Attorney General on suspicion of embezzlement and money laundering, according to reports.

The investigation is in reference to Germany’s awarding of the World Cup in 2006 after a series of cash flows began in 2002 and ended in 2005, Der Spiegel reported.

FIFA, football’s world governing body, launched an investigation in March into six men who were alleged to have played a part in the awarding of the competition to Germany.

Beckenbauer, 70, who headed the German World Cup bid, denies any corruption claims.
