Director Christopher Nolan has done a good job building anticipation for his upcoming Interstellar by revealing as little as possible about it; even the trailer doesn’t tell us much other than that the film involves Matthew McConaughey, space, and awesomeness.
But a new detail about the film that’s recently leaked out may temper some viewers’ enthusiasm, at least viewers with short attention spans: According to the film’s listing on an Australian cinema’s site, it runs 169 minutes, making it Nolan’s longest film to date.
Of course, Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was only four minutes less than that, and audiences had no problem sitting through that one: It’s currently one of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever, a list that also includes butt-burners likeTitanic, Avatar, and The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King.
Clearly audiences will happily sit through long-ass movies as long as they’re of the super fucking epic variety, which Interstellar appears to be.
Now that we’ve all come to terms with the fact that we may have to sit still for almost three whole hours come Interstellar’s release on November 7, we can return to obsessing over the tiny breadcrumbs of information about the film Nolan continues to casually toss our way.
Like the fact that he likens it to the blockbusters he grew up with, and says it’s a “mirror” of Inception that “expands out in the way Inceptioncontracts inwards.”
There are also a bunch of new stills of the film, courtesy of Empire magazine, for us to read all sorts of things into; judging by these images, Interstellar involves Matthew McConaughey, space, and awesomeness. I, for one, can’t wait. I’m going to start practicing my sitting now. (via)
